Benjamin found that the steel he used for the clock springs was too brittle (it kept breaking), so he started to experiment to make better metal. He eventually invented ‘crucible steel’ which was stronger than any other steel.
Crucible steel was harder and stronger than any other steel, and people all over the world used it.
A building at the Northern General Hospital is named after him.
